It is hard to believe that we are down to the last month of third grade. We are getting excited at the thought of being fourth graders and are preparing for that new challenge. This week we have been doing lots of new and exciting things in each of our subject areas.
Reading and Writing: We are learning to be researchers in room 12. We have each selected a state in which we are interested in learning more about. We have designed an information web with the big ideas that we will use to gather our research. Some of our big ideas include geography, food, weather, and fun things to do in our state. We will be using a combination of books, articles, and digital media in order to learn new facts about our state. We will work on paraphrasing, organizing ideas, and writing paragraphs with this information.
Science: We are learning about structures of life as we investigate living things such as crayfish, beetles, and seeds. We are comparing and contrasting these living creatures, watching them in their habitats and studying their behavior.
Social Studies: We are just about finished touring the Midwest region. We learned a lot about how goods are moved throughout our country using barges, trains and airplanes. We also visited fun places such as the Mall of American and Wrigley field as we learned about attractions in the Midwest.
Math: We are gearing up to take our chapter 6 test on Monday. Chapter 6 has focused on geometry as we have learned to classify shapes, make and name angles, and solve word problems about perimeter and area. We have spent two class days preparing for Monday's test and for the most part it seems that we have understood the main concepts of this unit. The one thing that we could all benefit from practicing a little more of is the word problems with perimeter and area more specifically how to determine in a word problem if we are solving for the perimeter or area. i.e. building a fence would be the perimeter because a fence goes around a yard and laying carpet would be area because carpet is inside the rectangular shape of a room.
