We had another great week in room 12! The highlight of our week was definitely performing in front of you last night! We have also been learning a lot in our subject areas, read below to learn more!
Reading: We are switching gears and are now reading informational text. We have discussed that our pace for reading nonfiction is a little bit slower so that we are taking the time to think and remember the new information our author is presenting. We are practicing previewing a book to find a little bit out about the topic, predicting what we think we will learn, and tapping into our prior knowledge to remember what we have already learned about this topic. We know that gives us power as readers and hopefully helps us make more sense of the new information. We are also learning how to summarize sections of text. We know that this is much different then copying the authors words. The third graders seem to enjoy experiencing this new genre.
Writing: This week we have had fun giving feedback to our narrative authors on our new interactive author's board in our classroom. We are also investigating the informational text features in author's work and will use this understanding to start our first informational piece next week.
Math: We are focusing right now on subtracting larger numbers wit accuracy. We have learned 3 new subtraction strategies: proof drawings, expanded method, and ungrouping. We have discussed that there might be one strategy that makes the most sense to us but we are working to practice all three so we can build our "mathematical toolbox" and have various strategies to draw from in our future problem solving. We also talked about the idea of using more than one strategy in order to check our answers to see if we are accurate.
Social Studies: This week we are starting a boat and bus tour of the Southest region! We have previewed the states and have used our mapping skills to complete our Southeast geography challenge. We have fun working in teams to answer questions about this region.
