Spring is HERE! We cannot believe that our third graders have nearly finished their third quarter of third grade and spring break is upon us! We guess it is true that "Time flies when you're having fun!" The third graders had another productive week of learning. Read below to find out more...
Reading: To culminate our reading unit, we have presented the third graders with a reading project. They have selected a topic of their choice that they have read about over the past few weeks. They are creating a Keynote presentation teaching others about their topic. Each slide has a specific purpose that is tied to a lesson we learned during our reading time. Skills such as comparing and contrasting, sequencing, and identifying key words are all a part of their project. Eventually the third graders will upload these to SeeSaw so that others can learn about the great things they read about during our unit.
Writing: We continue to work on developing our informational books during our writers workshop time. We are working on skills such as paragraph structure, adding meaningful details, writing with clarity, and writing with the purpose of teaching our audience something new. The students have chosen topics that they feel they are experts in and we love the diversity of topics that they have selected.
Math: We are working on developing our understanding of fractions. We have used manipulatives such as fraction bars and pie charts to understand the size of fractions so that we are able to compare them easier. We are also trying to understand how to order fractions on a number line which will help us better understand fractional units when we measure. These are challenging concepts and ones that we will take extra time to practice so that our students feel more confident over time.
Science: We have started our unit on light and heat. So far we have determined the difference between light sources and non-light sources and have talked a little bit about the invention of the light bulb. Next week we will have interesting experiments that teach us about reflection, mirrors, how light travels and shadows.
