We have had an exciting week in room 12! We loved our special field trip on Thursday to the Ford River Rouge factory. We learned all about Henry Ford and how he had a vision many, many years ago to make cars affordable to most people. We were impressed with how hard he had to work to make his vision become a reality. Also we loved seeing today's Ford vehicles being made right in front of our eyes! We watched a working assembly line and got to see things like seatbelts and windshields being put on the Ford trucks. We also loved the special 4D movie where we learned about how important it is to be innovative and design new things. Thank you to all our parent helpers who agreed to come with us! Here is what we have been learning in our subjects this week:
Reading: We are working on understanding how informational text is organized. We learned how information can be sequential, there could be sections that use comparisons and also text can be organized in topics and subtopics. It has been very helpful that what we are reading and discussing in reader's workshop we have been able to apply to our informational writing pieces in writer's workshop.
Writing: We are working on our personal expertise stories. We have developed our table of contents, done a lot of rehearsing where we verbally practice with a partner about what we hope to write about and we have began drafting our first few sections. It is a lot of fun exploring this new style of writing.
Social Studies: Today we took our chapter 6 test on the Southeast and the students did very well! Next week we will have an opportunity to be creative as we write a commercial enticing a visitor to come to the Southeast. We will be using our iPads to actually film our commercials and then we will share them with you!
Math: We are starting to review for our chapter 4 math test. Our test is scheduled for Tuesday. We have learned a lot about adding and subtracting large numbers and we feel that we are ready to move on! Our next chapter will actually be chapter 7, which is fractions. We felt that this would be a good idea so that we have a chance to explore fractions (which is pretty new for many of us) before the MSTEP test.
Have a wonderful weekend room 12 families!
