Hello Parents!
We have had a great week of learning in room 12. The students are really enjoying be a part of "March Reading Month" at Bemis. We have been reading a shared book at school that all the Bemis bears are enjoying. Our book is called The One and Only Ivan. The main character in our story is a silverback gorilla and he tells us about his imaginative life at the zoo. It has been fun to have a story that our younger buddies are familiar with as well as our 4th and 5th graders. We are looking forward to doing some special assignments with this book as the month continues.
Here is what we have been focusing in our different subject areas:
Reading: We are learning about non-fiction text. We have discussed our purpose for reading, have identified the main idea, learned to summarize, picked out key words and found their meanings, as well as studied non-fiction text features. The third graders seem excited about this new genre and have been spending a lot of time book shopping and filling their book boxes with nonfiction text.
Writing: We are connecting our reading and writing by learning how to write an informational piece. At this point students are learning how to pick a topic that they feel they are an expert in. From there, we have practiced rehearsing what we would like to teach our reader and we will soon be taking our big ideas and making our table of contents for our book. We hope that what we are learning in class will also help us with our Book-it project this month.
Social Studies: we are just about finished with the Southeast region of the United States. We were surprised to see how much the land and weather changed in this region as compared to the Northeast. We have visited neat places such as the Kennedy Space Center where we watched a real space shuttle launch! We also loved the Everglades in Florida where we learned about the many plants and animals that call this place their home.
Math: We have continued to practice our multi-digit addition and subtraction strategies. This week we have focused on using the inverse operation to help us check the accuracy of our answers. Also we are working on answering word problems that involve these two operations. Next week our big goal will be to once again solve multi-step word problems and write equations using a parenthesis.
Today was a great day of reading in room 12! We had so much fun with our blankets, pillows, books and flashlights as we took part in the school-wide read in! What fun!
