It is hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of April. We have had a very productive few weeks in room 12 as we have been finishing up units of study and gearing up for our upcoming MSTEP test. The students have completed their third marking period of third grade. Report cards were released to parents on Monday. If you have not had a chance to login to your child's account, please do so to view their report card. There will be one final report card that will be released in June.
Reading: The third graders are finishing up their unit on informational text. We have had the privilege of reading individually with almost all of the third graders for their spring reading assessment. This assessment was on informational text which was the perfect ending to our unit. The third graders are doing a wonderful job of understanding text features, reading slowly and rereading to learn the new information the author is presenting, and using their reading to write about the topics they are learning about.
Writing: For those of you that were able to join us for last night's Celebration of Thinking night, you were able to have a preview of the informational writing pieces the third graders have been working on. We have spent a great deal of time writing chapters, practicing paragraphing, organizing our writing, writing interesting leads and endings, and adding text features to our writing. We will be putting the finishing touches on these pieces next week and then will be excited to bring them home to share with you!
Science: We are about half way through our study of light and heat. This week, the third graders have learned about opaque, transparent and translucent objects. We have also learned new words such as reflection and seen these concepts come to life in various experiments. Students are now learning the properties of light and next will learn the properties of heat.
Math: Today we took our chapter 7 test on fractions. We were very pleased with how the students did on their tests. Next we will move into chapter 6 which is geometry. We decided to go out of order for these last few units so that the students would be exposed to fractions before the MStep test. We will finish the year by solving multistep problems that deal mainly with addition and subtraction.
